Beginning the Adoption Home Study

Homecoming day with your new child begins with a simple process. A few months before this wondrous event, our staff will meet with you at your residence. To prepare your heart while you vacuum the rug and tidy the sink, think about your motivations. Relax, and give yourself a few hours to talk with us. Let us get to know you. Together we will be able to create a picture of your new family.

An international adoption home study is not much different than what happens before a domestic adoption. There are standard questions about you, other members of your family, your experiences growing up, schooling and employment. The rest of the visit is designed to help our staff identify children who will most easily fit into your home life.

The patterns and adjustments necessary to fully respond to the needs of a child are simplified if you have experience parenting. New parents can expect a great deal of support from our staff during and following the home study. We are happy to discuss some of the more unexpected challenges that can come up when a little person becomes part of a family.

As the weeks draw closer to your travel overseas, these conversations guide you in the preparations that should be made. You will be busy painting walls, buying books and toys, and stocking up on finger foods. This physical transformation of your home is also time to share the news with family and friends, and reflect on how this joyful experience will impact the other aspects of your life.
